Is your home too big now? Are you tired of cleaning rooms you rarely use? Is the backyard too much to look after? If so, maybe it’s time to consider downsizing your home. The process of downsizing takes time. Over time we tend to accumulate items and to downsize you will need to go through every closet, cabinet and storage space to either discard or donate items. Read through these tips to help you downsize:

  1. Determine your needs. When you walk through your current home are there rooms not being used anymore? Make a list of the things you need and want in your new home and think about what rooms could be combined (i.e. Eat-In kitchen instead of separate kitchen and dining areas).
  2. De-clutter and let go. This is the most difficult step in the downsizing process. We tend to accumulate things over the years and these items find their way into closets, cabinets, basements and garages – never to see the light of day again. It’s time to get rid of all these unnecessary “things”. The process of downsizing takes time and can be emotional. Don’t rush the process.
  3. Measure your furniture. Measure each piece of furniture that you plan to keep and write it down. When viewing your next home, take a measuring tape so you can determine if your furniture will fit within the new space.
  4. Give yourself the gift of storage options. There are many storage options available to help you in your new smaller space. Ottomans with storage, under-bed storage bins, and wall mounted shelving can help you stay organized and keep your items tucked away.
