When you are selling your home, you want Buyers to be able to walk through and picture themselves living here. You want Buyers to look at your room sizes and upgrades and layout. You do not want them to get distracted by your personal items and for your security, to walk with away with your valuables. Here are the Top 10 Items to Put Away When Selling Your Home:

1. Jewelry & Valuables
Don’t leave your jewelry and valuables lying around. The tip is more for security than anything else. Realtors(r) do their best to screen Buyers and watch them during the showing, but some items can be snatched very quickly. Please hide your jewelry and valuables.

2. Family Photos
Buyers need to be able to picture themselves living in your home and that is difficult to do when there are your family photos throughout the house. Also, they are nosy and will look to see if they know you! Take down the family photos and box them up for moving.

3. Kids Drawings
Yes, the kids drawings are super cute! But Buyers can get distracted if your fridge is covered in them. Take them down and pack them away so you can display them in your new home.

4. Medications
Don’t leave your medications laying around on counters or on top of dressers. If you have a built-in medicine cabinet, Buyers will look in it. Remove your medications and hide them in a dresser where Buyers won’t look.

5. Personal Electronics
Laptops, Ear Buds, Tablets etc. are easy to grab and hide items. For your security, hide your personal electronics.

6. X-Rated Materials
This one should be obvious, but you’d be amazed at some of the things we see!

7. Small Appliances
Remove the extra small appliances off your kitchen counters. This includes waffle makers, smoothie blenders etc. You want your kitchen counters to be as empty as possible. Put away hair dryers and curling irons etc off the bathroom counters as well.

8. Out of Season Items
Remove Christmas decor if it’s January. Halloween items after Oct 31st. If it’s out of season, please pack it away.

9. Taxidermy Items
You may be an avid hunter and proud of your displays, but Buyer’s don’t like to see stuffed animals on the walls. Pack them away for the new house.

10. Packed Boxes
You’ve been busy packing in anticipation of putting your home on the market (and following all The Saugeen Team’s tips), but now you have lots of packed boxes sitting around. Try not to stack them all in one room or in the garage, it will make the rooms look smaller and untidy. Ideally your packed boxes should be stored in an off-site storage unit or in an unfinished storage room.
